Mittlerweile hat einjähriger Beifuß jedoch auch andere Gebiete unseres Globus erobert - man findet die Pflanzenart weltweit in vielen gemäßigten, subtropischen und tropischen Zonen, einschließlich ganz Asien, Europa und Nordafrika. Selbst vor dem trockenen Klima der Wüsten und Halbwüsten schreckt er nicht zurück und schlägt hier seine Wurzeln. Am liebsten gedeiht einjähriger Beifuß jedoch auf dem eurasischen Kontinent, wo man ihn oft als Wildwuchs oder im Anbau erblicken kann.

Weltweit gibt es etwa 400 verschiedene Arten von Beifuß . Der Name kommt von daher: Nach ihren tagelangen Märschen rieben sich römische Soldaten ihre Füße zur Erfrischung mit Beifußgewächsen ein; daher wurde der Bei-Fuß zum Beifuß. Bei uns heimisch ist vor allem der gemeine oder auch gewöhnliche Beifuß (Artemisia vulgaris), welcher bereits von den Germanen sehr geschätzt und bei traditionellen und rituellen Zwecken Verwendung fand. Auch der Wermut (Artemisia absinthium) ist ein Teil der Beifuß-Familie. Da die Blätter charakteristisch anders aussehen, ist es nicht schwer, die verschiedenen Arten auseinanderzuhalten.
